Objectives

The selected themes on the oral surgery teaching, aim the acquisition of knowledge and skills for different pathologies and surgical techniques. This subject expects to form a surgical profile of the future health professional.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student has to be able to: 
- Understand the importance of examination, diagnosis and documenting. 
- Obtain a complete clinical and medical history of the patient. 
- Acknowledge surgical material for all interventions. 
- Work in a operating room. 
- Carry out all the procedures for dental extraction. 
- Perform a soft tissue surgery. 
- Treat an acute infection.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretic and practical classes. Theoretic classes address essential themes not in exhaustive way.
Theoretic classes last 45 minutes, keeping the final 15 minutes for student’s questions.
The practical classes are based on surgical procedures under the supervision of a teacher. The student registration of all surgical procedures is required.

Eligibility for exams

Follows the UP frequency polity. See academic regulation of UP and FMDUP. (A minimum of 75% of class attendance.)

Calculation formula of final grade

Theoretic-pratical curricular unit:
Final mark = ( Theoretical test x 0,45) + (average of all practical work + clinical reports + continuous evaluation mark)x 0,45 + (class attendance x 0,1)

Not required.

The theoretic-pratical componets are considered indispensables for the approval of all students. The ones with special polity status can be evaluated out of normal calendar. Although for knowledge of rules legally set for each case one must consult the following documents:
