Objectives

"Pharmacology and Therapeutics I" (3rd year; 1st semester) has two main objectives:
- knowledge acquisition on the pharmacology of the various systems, continuing the syllabus of the previous unit "Pharmacology" (2nd year; 2nd semester);
- a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the various pharmacological groups, aiming the knowledge of the actual drugs and the acquisition of skills for a critical assessment of the new drugs.

Learning outcomes and competences

“Pharmacology and Therapeutics I” is set up to provide the students with a comprehensive knowledge of the various pharmacological groups. This view is an essential requirement for the prescription of drugs that are used in dentistry, and also for the possible implications that drugs with other therapeutic indications may have in the clinical setting, mainly related to drug interactions and adverse drug reaction to oral health. This knowledge is applied later in the unit "Pharmacology and Therapeutics II" (4th year, 2nd semester), which addresses the aspects related to therapeutics in dentistry.
A comprehensive pharmacological preparation instills in the students the importance of an integrated view of the pharmacological profile of a drug and the underlying pathophysiological process in the optimization of drug therapy.
