Objectives
The objectives of this course are designed to provide students with skills to enable them to scientific research in the areas of Oral Rehabilitation - Fixed Prosthodontics, Removable Prosthodontics and Occlusion and Orofacial Pain.
- Be competent in the knowledge of materials, techniques and methodologies of research in dental and occlusion
prosthesis, and its interrelation with other important sciences for the training of dentists, including Implantology,
Oral Surgery, Periodontology, Orofacial Genetics and Biomechanics.
- Be aware of laboratory procedures and new technologies used in Dental Prosthesis and Occlusion, and its
relations with the research methodologies.
- Have knowledge of research leading to PhD theses in Prosthodontics in Portuguese dentistry schools.
Learning outcomes and competences
The syllabus of this course is structured in order to acquire knowledge and methodologies necessary to carry out research leading to doctoral thesis or other scientific publications related to the oral rehabilitation.
In the theoretical and practical lessons, students have the opportunity to follow and discuss the research methodologies most commonly used, including those that have been applied in doctoral theses already approved, and so know and understand all the procedures necessary for its own investigation.
This course is organized in order to use different teaching methods, according to the syllabus and the established objectives. So they are taught theoretical lessons, in which students have the opportunity to acquire the knowledge needed for scientific research in Oral Rehabilitation (and which have an individual work project - objectives, material and methods, and bibliography), and also where students simulate the defense of a doctoral thesis already defended in University of Porto or in other Portuguese universities.
The realization of the scientific work allows to motivate students for research in the area, and creatively apply the knowledge gained in this and other curricular units.
The presentation of a thesis enables the student to implemente the knowledge of academic standards and make clear the most important aspects related to subsequent public defense, including effective way to communicate (oral and written), recognizing the role of non-verbal and verbal communication aspects.

Calculation formula of final grade
The final grade is calculated taking into account the following parameters:
1. Scientific work (project of research) - 50%
2. Public presentation (to teachers and other students of the curricular unit) of a thesis defended in this area of
knowledge, previously approved by the Regent - 50%
Grading less than 9,5 implies the failure in the continuous assessment. The student can make final exam (normal time and/ or resource season), consisting of a written test and an oral exam.
