Objectives

The curricular unit "Investigation Monography or Clinical Report" consists on the realization of an individual work that includes an objective / justification, a thematic development, in the case of the Monography. Regarding the clinical activity report the student must present a set of clinical cases performed during the course.
The two modalities are subject to presentation and public discussion for the respective evaluation.
It is intended that the student acquires experience in the development of research or review works, know search and correct information, have critical sense and make a self-assessment exercise carried out clinical activity.
According to the theme to be developed by students, they are established specific objectives by the respective mastermind.

Learning outcomes and competences

Each curricular unit FMDUP tailor their teaching methods according with the specificity of their syllabus.
In the course of Dental Medicine, the practical component is of major importance and the accompanied training is fundamental to achieved skills that otherwise would not be possible.
In the first two years of the course of Dentistry there are basic curricular units, some of them taught at the Faculty of Medicine of U.Porto and other in the School of Dental Medicine, necessary to obtain theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical knowledge essentials to prepare students for the phase following phase, the clinical practice. The final stage of the course is delivered by the different curricular units, initially with the pre-clinical practice followed by clinical training.

The syllabus of the curricular unit of "Investigation Monography ou Clinical Report" are developed depending on the chosen theme.
The student will have later the support of an advisor or and, if necessary, another superviser in the respective scientific area.

Teaching methods and learning activities

It should be considered the theme of scientific research or clinical report activity to be developed by students, as well as the inherent subjectivity of the teaching methodologies of the respective advisors who will be responsible to supervise the preparation of the business plan required to the implementation of the research dissertation or clinical activity report; support the implementation of actions to develop, according to the business plan proposed; collaborate with the coadvisor (if existed) on all matters relating to the work to be done; guide the development of the final work; ensure compliance with the deadlines of the final work and support the student in the public presentation.
The jury is composed by a president, an arguer and an advisor.
The public defense must be ensured within a maximum of 60 minutes.
It will be assigned a numerical scale rating of 0-20.

Observations

The syllabus of Master in Dental Medicine includes the curricular unit "Monograph Research / Clinical Activity Report achievement of which implies the elaboration of a scientific work guided by a teacher, or PhD researcher at the U.Porto, or Doctor or Specialist national or foreign merit recognized by the competent organ of the School of Dental Medicine da U.Porto. Scientific work may be Dissertation Research and Clinical Activity Report according to the student's choice.
The Pedagogical Council is presently making amendments to the system of absence justification in order to encourage students participation in scientific events, including activities related to scientific research.
