Objectives

Medical physiology explores organic function in the different grades of its organization, from the sub cellular level to the organism itself.
The Course Unit Physiology I has the following objectives:
- Give to "Medicina Dentária" students basic knowledge to permit comprehension of the mechanisms of body function (organic systems and its integrated assessment;
- Instigate the discussion about the effect of multiple perturbations in organic balance (homeostasis) by simulation and / or case problem solving;
- Stimulate critical attitude and rational interpretation of physiologic concepts
- Stimulate study and information integration capacity, essential qualities for the application of an evidence based Medicine

Learning outcomes and competences

1. To learn the cellular and sub-cellular mechanisms, underlying the functional aspects of the human body.
2. To know the normal function of the different organs and systems of the human body.
3. To acquire a base of knowledge to use in the several physiological areas and to apply later in the other curricular units of the course and in the future clinical practice.

Theoretical Sessions:
General principles of renal physiology. Hydroelectrolytic equilibrium. Acid-base physiology. Potassium, phosphorus and calcium equilibrium. Hypothalamus-pituitary physiology. Endocrine pancreas and metabolism. Thyroid and adrenal physiology. Speech physiology. Stomato-gnatic physiology. Gastrointestinal motility and secretions. Hepatic physiology. Nutrient digestion and absorption. Female and male reproductive physiology. Physiologic adaptations to pregancy.

Theorico - Practical  Sessions:
Glomerular filtration. Sodium and water balance. Acid-base balance. Integration of renal physiology. Phosphocalcic metabolism. Obesity. Diabetes mellitus pathophysiology. Hypathalamic and pituitary pathophysiology. Thyroid pathophysiology. Adrenal pathophysiology. Integration of endocrine physiology. Digestive physiology. Reproductive physiology. Pregnancy and placenta. Integration of digestive and reproductive physiology.

Pratical  Sessions:  
Analysis of a scientific paper in Physiology. Clinical cases of renal physiology, phosphocalcic metabolism, endocrine pancreas, thyroid and adrenal gland. Gastrointestinal pathophysiology. Clinical cases of reproductive pathophysiology.

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Theorico-practical and practical evaluation (P):
- Continuos by both theatchers corresponding to 20% of the final classification (see formula).
- approval in at least 2 of 4 mini-tests throughout the semester (5 questions of multiple choice and 5 of tru/false)
- formal practical competences evaluation obrigatory

2. Theorical evaluation (T):
- Writen examination corresponding to 80% of the final classification. The examination is made by 40 multiple-choice questions. For approval it is required a minimal classification of 9.5 values.


Final classification= 0,2*P + 0,8*T
