Objectives

- To know and understand the importance of the microbial world: bacteria, fungi, parasites, viruses and prions.
- To know the microbial taxonomy, anatomy, physiology, metabolism and genetics.
- To know and understand the laboratorial methods and techniques used in microorganisms handling, isolation, characterization, identification and study.

Learning outcomes and competences

It is expected that students develop skills of self-learning, reflection, interpretation, analysis, integration and discussion of acquired knowledge, individually and in teams' laboratory work , reading and critical analysis of scientific articles, the use of knowledge acquired in other scientific areas, oral and written communication, to develop critical, creative and scientific thinking, and last but not least, the sense of responsibility and honesty.

2) Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells biology.

3) Microbial nutrition and metabolism.

4) Microbial growth.

5) Microbial genetics.

6) Classification of Microorganisms.

7) The Prokaryotes: Domains Bacteria and Archaea. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.

8) The Eukaryotes: Fungi and Parasites. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.

9) Viruses and Prions. Morphology, reproduction, culture and taxonomy.
