Objectives

Acquisition of knowledge and experience in developing hypotheses treatment for oral rehabilitation on the basis of data collected and the application of current scientific and technical knowledge, particularly in the following aspects:



  1. Dental materials



  2. Clinical Imaging



  3. Aesthetic Destistry



  4. Veneers and adhesion



  5. Excessive tooth wear



  6. Oral rehabilitation in the elderly


Learning outcomes and competences

As a result of learning students will be competent in the following areas:



  1. Dental materials: Knowing the different materials related to Prosthodontics; Know how to select the most suitable material for each case; Manipulating the different materials correctly; To evaluate the final result of each material.



  2. Clinical Imaging: interpreting radiographic images and write an accurated radiographic report.



  3. Aesthetic Destistry: Show a specialist level skill in the planning of smile design; Show competency at a specialist level for preparation of teeth for direct and indirect restorations; Select the appropriate material for direct and indirect restorations; Provide appropriate provisional restorations for intermediate stages of treatment; Fit restorations using appropriate adhesives or cements ensuring that appearance, occlusion and function are in harmony with the remaining dentition and patient’s wishes.



  4. Veneers and adhesion: Show a specialist level skill in the planning of veneers; Show competency at a specialist level for preparation of teeth for veneers; Select the appropriate material for veneers; Use appropriate adhesives ensuring that appearance, occlusion and function are in harmony with the remaining dentition and patient’s wishes.



  5. Excessive tooth wear: Show a specialist level skill in the planning of patients with tooth wear; Show competency at a specialist level for preparation of teeth for direct and indirect restorations; Select the appropriate material for direct and indirect restorations; Provide appropriate provisional restorations for intermediate stages of treatment; Fit restorations using appropriate adhesives or cements ensuring that appearance, occlusion and function are in harmony with the remaining dentition and patient’s wishes.



  6. Oral rehabilitation in the elderly: Understand the characteristics of oral rehabilitation in the elderly; Adapt the methods of treatment to the specific needs of this population.

1.Dental Materials

Biomaterials relevant to prosthodontics

2.Imaging

CT scans and other radiographic images in relation with high complex clinical cases.

3.Aesthetic Dentistry

Dental procedures for managing changes in tooth colour and morphology; Techniques, materials and technologies available for altering tooth colour and proportion; Ceramics and ceramic systems; Laboratory requirements and laboratory technicians; Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment.
4.Venners and Adhesion

Veneers: incisal edge preparation and interdental spaces. Materials and bonding techniques.

5.Excessive tooth wear

Aetiological factors;Techniques, materials and technologies available; Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment in tooth wear

6. Oral rehabilitation in the elderly: Physical and psychological changes of the elderly patient and their impact on treatment plan.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Seminars, which may be presented by the students, the teachers of the course, by visiting professors from other UCs of FMDUP and also teachers of other universities.
