Objectives

The objectives of this course are designed to provide students with skills to enable them to study and understand the aspects involved in oral rehabilitation, namely those relating to the areas of Fixed Prosthodontics (simple and medium complexity treatments on teeth and implant), of Removable Prosthodontics (classic and simple and complex implant overdentures on implants), and Occlusion and Orofacial Pain (EMG, TENS, occlusal splints), under faculty supervision.

Learning outcomes and competences

- High familiarity with available treatment options in order to formulate an overall integrated plan

- Ranking the diagnostic tests most commonly used

- Independent clinical experience in patients under supervision: simple and medium complexity treatments of Fixed Prosthesis (crowns, short and large span bridges, ceramic or metal-ceramic, on teeth and implant); Removable dentures (partial and full dentures, acrylic and skeletal, and simple and complex implant overdentures); Occlusion (EMG, TENS, occlusal splints).

- Aesthetic sensibility

- Be aware of high pratical laboratory procedures used in fixed restorations, tooth or implant-supported, with different ceramic systems; Removable prosthesis, including the placement of attachments in implant overdentures

- Co-ordinate overall treatment and care of patients and appreciate when it is appropriate to refer to a specialist

- Become an effective and efficient leader of a multi professional team

Working method

Presencial

Program

Practical classes to patients:
- Clinical history and clinical examination- Study of simple and complex clinical cases (with the teacher, in their own class and in the presence of the patient, next week without the presence of the patient). The treatment plan, uni or multi-disciplinary, with alternatives and their budgets, approved by the teacher is presented to the patient, in a written document. The agreed treatment plan will be, in detail and clinical sessions, approved by the teacher.
- Clinical care of patients (2 students per box), for rehabilitation with Fixed Prosthodontics (inlays, crowns and short and large span bridges, ceramic, metal-ceramic, on teeth and implant); Removable dentures (partial and full dentures, acrylic, skeletal, and simple and complex implant overdentures); Occlusion (EMG, TENS, occlusal splints).
- Practical demonstrations by the teacher.
- Once a month are discussed the most exemplary treatment plans of their clinical practice.

Teaching methods and learning activities

The programmatic content fits to the defined objectives. Making the consultation  under faculty supervision the student will investigate all cognitive, technical and affective abilities, and apply their knowledge in an integrated way, regarding the psychological relationship, to current knowledge needed to uni or multidisciplinary planning, the field of specific surgical techniques, the choice of materials and techniques, the aesthetic aspects and the color choice, the relationship with dental technician and the need for support from other disciplines.
The monthly group discussions are used to facilitate the development of independent decision-making in the diagnosis, planning and execution of the treatment, and integration with theoretical knowledge. These aspects should be treated in mandatorybpatient report which requires research and use of scientific information critically.Clinical cases treated can still be addressed in scientific articles that can be performed in others UCs.
