Objectives

Aims:
To acquire skills in the pharmacotherapeutic management of the relevant clinical conditions in dentistry – control of pain and inflammation, control of infection, control of anxiety, control of hemostasis – in normal situation and in the medically compromised patient.

Program

1. Concepts in Pharmacotherapeutics
Factors influencing drug effects. Adverse drug effects. Drug interactions.
Drug prescription. Pharmacovigilance.
Patient assessment: laboratory diagnostic testing.

2. Clinical pharmacology of local anesthetics.
Adverse effects, drug interactions. Clinical use.

3. Control of acute pain.
Analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs.
Adverse effects, drug interactions. Prescription protocols. Discussion of clinical cases.

4. Control of chronic pain.
Groups of drugs. Adverse effects, drug interactions.

5. Anxiety control.
Groups of drugs. Adverse effects, drug interactions. Prescription protocols. Discussion of clinical cases.

6. Clinical pharmacology of hemostatics.

7. Infection control.
Principles of antibiotic therapy.
Antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral drugs. Adverse effects, drug interactions.
Antibiotic prophylaxis.
Prescription protocols. Discussion of clinical cases.

8. Prescription on the patient with systemic pathology.
Cardiovascular disease. Pulmonary disease. Gastrointestinal disease. Endocrine disease. Neurologic, behavioral and psychiatric disorders. Alterações do sistema imunitário. Hematologic and oncologic disease.
Medical history and assessment.
Precautions during the dental procedures. Oral manifestations of the pathology/therapeutics. Drug interactions. Prescription protocols. Discussion of clinical cases.

9. Common medical emergencies in the dental office: pharmacological management.

10. Pharmacotherapeutics in Oral Surgery, Periodontology and Endodontics (teached in collaboration with the disciplines of Oral Surgery, Periodontology and Endodontics).
