EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
The subject of Science and Technology of Biomaterials has the main purpose to teach the theoretical and practical education of the characteristics and production processes of the dental materials. Education in its current concept, must be informative and formative. To obtain this skill, the pupil must have an active and conscientious participation in the learning process. The pupil participation in learning process must be constantly stimulated. This participation, without intending the disappearance of the formal education, more points a head with respect to a format of knowledge distribution where the focus is especially in who learns and not in who teaches, as in the traditional education. The function of the teacher is essentially to stimulate the acquisition of knowledge and the methods control, as well as guiding the pupils in its study. This conception of learning based on the discovery of the knowledge and less in the passive information acquisition, nowadays is considered elementary for process of a continuous education, crucial to all health professionals and mainly for Dental Medicine professionals.
PRIMARY EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
The discipline of Science and Technology of Biomaterials should provide to the pupil these indispensable skills:
- To learn the basic and elementary principles of the Biomaterials Science.
- To know the definitions and terminology relative to metals, ceramics, polymers and its combinations.
- To learn the scientific bases to select, to manipulate and to apply the dental materials.
- To learn, through specific exercises, the correct appliance of each dental material.
FINAL EDUCATIONAL PURPOSES
When completing the course of Biomaterials the pupil must be qualified:
- To select and to manipulate the dental materials.
- To evaluate the biomaterials performance based in the scientific knowledge of its composition, structure and properties
- To know the biomaterials limitations and the characteristics that can cause alterations when in service.
- To recognize and to understand the reasons for dental materials clinical failure.
- To evaluate in a critical way the characteristics of new materials presented by the producing industry, by the international standardization organizations or reported in scientific journals.

GENERAL ASPECTS:
The discipline oft Science and Technology of the Biomaterials can be defined as the study of the characteristics and production processes of dental materials. Frequently assigned by the Biomaterials synonymy, this education area constitutes the application of the Science Materials basic principles in the Dental Medicine field. In the scope of this discipline are considered the restorative materials used in the dental medicine specialties and the materials related with the laboratorial technological procedures.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The subject of Science and Technology of Biomateriais III is given in the first semester of the 5º year of the Integrated Master in Dental Medicine and it is organized in theoretical and practical lessons.
In the theoretical lessons, bibliography of base for each subject of the program is indicated and in the practical lessons complementary bibliography is also indicated, specifying the pages to consult of the cited books and Journals.
This bibliography intends to be only one contribution for a small library of references, destined not only to the immediate preparation of the subject, as for eventual later consultation.
