Abstract (EN): The analysis of STR (short tandem repeat) markers typically used in forensic genetics has shown that substantial level of population stratification exists across different urban populations; nevertheless, most of the differences between any pair of urban populations reside in a few markers. In order to determine to what extent there is a real impact in forensic casework, we performed a comparison of CLRs (combined likelihood ratios) of 1906 genetic profiles from 8 different populations from Argentina. CLRs were computed using 15 and 5 STRs and 8 different (reference) population frequency databases. A random sampling of individuals in each population was performed in order to generate a mean value and standard deviations for the CLRs of every profile. One-way-ANOVA and a post hoc test (Dunnet) were applied to assess the significance of the differences between the mean CLRs values. ANOVA P-values lower than 0.05 were obtained in different proportions of the comparisons for each population. Differences were most notable when comparing CLRs from urban populations with those from native populations, and appeared to become more important when comparing 5-STRs CLRs. Results are consistent with previous findings on population stratification and support the use of local reference databases in forensic casework.
