Abstract (EN):
One Health is a collaborative and transdisciplinary approach which intends to preserve human, animal, and environmental health through surveillance, prevention, and mitigation. The main objective of One Health is to attain optimal health and sustainability for humans, animals, and the environment simultaneously. This chapter addresses the history, benefits, and obstacles to the implementation of the One Health approach. Practical principles are described, such as the division of the approach in three collaboration levels (policy, institutional, operational) and by following a systems approach to describe the complex system being addressed. Eight global challenges for the XXI century that should be addressed following a One Health approach include outbreaks of emerging infectious diseases, risks and benefits of companion animals, water and food security and safety, socioeconomic and cultural environments, antimicrobial resistance, environmental contamination, climate change, and biodiversity, habitat loss, and human encroachment into wildlife. Finally, concise case studies present a practical application of a One Health approach involving issues the simultaneously involve human, animals, and the environment.
