This chapter discusses instances of deliberate, creative misreading in ekphrastic poems by three Irish authors: Ciaran Carson (1948–2019), Paul Durcan (1944–) and Paul Muldoon (1951–). It exposes the tensions and discontinuities that such poems bring out between their (verbal) medium and the pictorial artefacts that they ostensibly address and translate, at the interface between literary and visual cultures. Ultimately, it sustains the argument that practices of provocative refiguration are integral to the three writers’ various poetics, and define their contributions to current understandings of translational practice and intermedial dynamics. Throughout, the discussion of the poems invokes and derives conceptual leverage from David Johnston’s notion of “writing forward”.
