Subject:
DEVELOPMENT OF ARTIFICIAL REEFS USING ADDITIVE MANUFACTURING AND WASTE MATERIALS, AND PROMOTION OF ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION TECHNIQUES THROUGH AN EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM
Resumo (PT):
Abstract (EN):
This work aims to investigate the application of artificial reefs as an emerging technological
tool for ecological restoration. The initiative is designed to develop an interdisciplinary
curriculum and e-learning platform to promote marine conservation, while enhancing the
training of Erasmus students and professionals. This aligns with the EU Green Deal’s objectives
for sustainable ecosystems and facilitates knowledge exchange and skill development across
Europe. Funded by Erasmus+, the project analyzes both European and national data on reef
habitats, restoration practices, and the deployment of artificial reefs. In addition, a series of
face-to-face training programs will be organized, enabling participant mobility across Portugal,
Spain, and Croatia. The project also involves the development and implementation of an
artificial reef through extrusion-based additive manufacturing, utilizing waste-derived materials
such as mussel shells. The scientific findings from this process will be integrated into the
curriculum, providing students and professionals with access to multidisciplinary research and
practical knowledge on artificial reefs and their role in ecological restoration.
