Abstract (EN):
It was only at the end of the 19th century that there appeared what is still today regarded as a classic work, an essential reference for anyone interested in the Portuguese fishing universes. This is the vast survey contained in the 1891 work by António Artur Baldaque da Silva (1852-1915), entitled Estado Actual das Pescas em Portugal Comprehendendo a Pesca Marítima, Fluvial e Lacustre em todo o Continente do Reino, referido ao anno de 1886 (The Current State of Fishing in Portugal Including Ocean, River and Lake Fishing throughout the Whole of the Mainland Kingdom, for 1886).
At the same time some zoologists initiated a program of laboratories researching about Portuguese fisheries. Those works were the outcome of direct observation and belongs in a wider group, in which we may include the Inquéritos Industriais (Industrial Surveys) carried out during the same period by other Crown officials, and, the royal crown
