Abstract (EN): The 1522 siege of Rhodes was a historical episode that had a significant impact on Portugal. For a decade before the siege, the Portuguese monarchy was very keen on interfering in the choice of the prior of the Hospitallers in Portugal. To achieve his goals, the Portuguese King became closer to the papacy and the central headquarters of the Order. He included this institution in the Portuguese political ambitions around the Mediterranean. Although few Portuguese knights participated in this siege, its consequences in Portugal were broader. The monarchy considered the Mediterranean a particular area of interest for its foreign and religious policy within the late crusade environment. Therefore, the island of Rhodes was viewed from that perspective. While the King was committed to fighting the Ottomans at Rhodes, he also tried to take advantage of the situation. On the one hand, this episode helps place the history of Portugal in its broader European context, and on the other, it provides a deeper reading of the 1522 siege of Rhodes.
