Resumo (PT): As teses de doutoramento sobre História da Geografia Portuguesa não são comuns; nem o são aqueles que utilizam uma abordagem geográfica da História da Ciência: José Braga Costa fez as duas coisas, e por isso apre-senta à comunidade académica uma ‘Geografia da Geografia Portuguesa’: isso, por si só, é digno de nota. Mas o autor elabora também um retrato dos primeiros anos da vida científica de Orlando Ribeiro que é ao mesmo tempo preciso e revelador, contextualizando as práticas científicas do geógrafo nos diversos contextos espaciais e sociais — o bairro da Politécnica, a velha Faculdade de Letras de Lisboa, o colégio Infante de Sagres, o Insti-tuto de Geografia da Sorbonne, em Paris ... — que progressivamente definem o seu posicionamento na sociedade e especialmente na Universidade. No fim de ler este estudo, o leitor compreende melhor o temperamento científico de Orlando Ribeiro, e os principais atributos do seu ‘comentário geográfico’ de terras e de gentes. Pessoalmente, fiquei impressionado com a clareza com que se mostra como o temperamento de Ribeiro não é inconsistente com o génio goethiano (‘solidão acompanhada’) e como tal se transcreve, em múltiplas escalas, para os temas de suas futuras pesquisas

Abstract (EN): Doctoral theses on the History of Portuguese Geography are not common; neither are those who use a geographical approach to the History of Science. José Braga Costa did both, and so he presents the academic community with a ‘Geography of Portuguese Geography’: that in itself is noteworthy. But the author also elabo-rates on a portrait of the first years of Orlando Ribeiro scientific life that is both accurate and revealing, con-textualising the geographer’s scientific practices in the various spatial and social contexts — the Polytechnic School neighbourhood, the old Faculty of Arts in Lisbon, the Infante de Sagres high school, the Geography Insti-tute of the Sorbonne, in Paris... — that progressively define his position in society and especially in the Univer-sity. At the end of reading this study, the reader better understands Orlando Ribeiro’s scientific temperament, and the main attributes of his ‘geographical commentary’ on lands and people. Personally, I was impressed by the clarity with which it is shown how Ribeiro’s temperament is not inconsistent with the Goethean genius (‘accompanied loneliness’) and how this translates, on multiple scales, into the themes of his future research
