Resumo (PT): A a razão, também ela responsável por atos da maior desumanidade.História da Guerra do Peloponeso é um eloquente testemunho de época no que diz respeito ao interesse pela psicologia humana, característico da vida intelectual e literária da Atenas de finais do séc. V a.C. Na procura das causas profundas da guerra e da explicação das suas consequências, o historiador destaca a o papel determinante da “natureza humana” e do seu precário equilíbrio entre razão e paixão. Mas, apesar de os impulsos irracionais estarem muitas vezes na origem das piores decisões, Tucídides não deixa de apontar para o carácter problemático da própria razão, também ela responsável por atos da maior desumanidade.

Abstract (EN): The History of the Peloponnesian War is an eloquent testimony regarding the interest in human psychology, characteristic of the intellectual and literary life of Athens at the end of the 5th century BC. In the search for the causes of the war and for the explanation of its consequences, the historian highlights the determining roleof “human nature” and its precarious balance between reason and passion. But, despite the fact that irrational impulses are often at the origin of the worst decisions, Thucydides does not fail to point to the problematic nature of reason itself, which is also responsible for acts of the greatest inhumanity.
