Resumo (PT):
Abstract (EN): The increasing integration of the European economy, along with growing worker and company mobility, demands deep-rooted changes in the organizational structures of the Portuguese construction industry, and all-around adoption of state-of-the-art ICT. Small, medium and large companies in this economic sector need to become more productive, more flexible and more competitive. To fulfill these objectives in an integrated economy using ICT, the construction industry will have to adopt existing standards, start using interesting research to its full extent, and aim for excellence. The authors of this paper have been involved in several ICT R&D projects and have studied the Portuguese construction industry for the past 4 years. This paper will address the current situation of leading and lagging companies and the positive and negative results of R&D projects. It will also summarise the role of the industry associations in ICT promotion, and the results of private e-marketplace initiatives. In order to be successful, the long term research projects should include construction and ICT companies, professional associations and research institutes. Our experience shows that successful project results will be further exploited and disseminated with such consortium composition.
