Abstract (EN):
The authors of this paper have been involved in several ICT R&D projects and have studied the Portuguese construction industry for the past 4 years. This paper will address the current situation of leading companies as well as the positive results of R&D projects. It will also summarise the role of the industry associations in ICT promotion, and the results of private e-marketplace initiatives. Particular attention will be directed to the role that e-marketplaces should have in increasing the quality of the business processes in the industry, and the possibilities of interfacing with information systems, including internal and external proprietary e-business initiatives. The study identifies concrete strategies for the Portuguese construction industry through an evaluation of both the ongoing and the recently finished national ICT projects in the construction sector (e.g., AMMnet, CICnet, eConstroi, Construlink). A comparison with the European IST projects in this sector (particularly the ones with Portuguese partners) will provide for a better understanding of the Portuguese situation concerning ICT implementation. Finally, the analysis of the actions taken by these projects towards the dissemination of this information will help to establish a recommendation for the development of ICT in Portuguese companies, leading ultimately to excellence.
