Abstract (EN):
Today´s common accessibility to informatics tools, such as You Tube videos, Power Point presentations, slide shares, reports, and all kind of information freely available on the internet, puts teaching staff under a big pressure to innovate. Capture students attention during College classes is a very demanding task, pushing professors for continuous creativity in terms of teaching tools and even motivating physical presence in classes. In the course of Materials for Mechanical Construction I, of the Integrated Masters Course in Mechanical Engineering of Faculty of Engineering of University of Porto, the practical classes are structured around a complete experimental work where students have the opportunity to design a heat treatment of a given steel, or another metallic material, and use all the necessary equipment to predict and further characterize the effect of the treatment on the furnished and final microstructure and mechanical properties. This experimental work, although very demanding, is extremely appreciated by the students, leading to great motivation for learning and an uncommon enrolment that is reflected on the good practical final grades. This paper presents the methodology adopted, describes the experimental works done by the students and the range of final grades obtained.
