Abstract (EN): Absolute safety of a structure can never be guaranteed because of our limited knowledge and inability to predict the future conditions. The reliability analysis, dealing with the probability of a particular behaviour of a structure, can be reached considering knowledge of the geometrical, constitutive properties and actions randomness and uncertainties. The main advantage is to quantify this probability and to give information about the parameters that mostly influence the behaviour under study. Reliability theory evolved from other areas and requires special adaptation to deal with the geotechnical environment. In fact, geotechnical engineers are still not used to make regular applications of this methodology because it has some difficulties and sometimes it is laborious and not practical. Nevertheless, because of regulation codes and social concerns, geotechnical engineers need to increase their ability to deal with uncertainty, and it would definitely help with decision making. Based in this background, this paper aims to show two simple reliability approaches to evaluate bearing capacity of vertically loaded piles. A practical example is presented to illustrate the applicability of the proposed procedure.
