Abstract (EN): Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is an integrated system designed to capture, create, store, analyze, manage, and visualize different types of spatial and geographical data/information. GIS technologies can be used in damage assessment, thematic hazard mapping, establishing early warning systems, for risk prediction and analyses, and prioritization of mitigation alternatives. GIS combined with remote sensing data can be a powerful tool for the evaluation of several phenomena and management of natural disasters. In this context, the results obtained from remote sensing analyzes using GIS tools can be used for decision making support and to provide measures to protect an area from natural disasters. In this chapter we aim to discuss the synergy between GIS and remote sensing applied to each one of the natural disasters described in Chapter 10, considering the development of applications under GIS software. The synergy between remote sensing and GIS techniques allows supporting decision-making by disaster managers, transforming data into information. In the future, with the new advances in remote sensing sensors technology, GIS capabilities and with algorithms improvements, these techniques will improve their capability to respond to this type of disaster, in real-time. © 2022 Elsevier Inc.
