Resumo (PT): O progressivo avanço da Reforma Protestante em vários territórios europeus, a partir de 1517, provocou uma fratura na Cristandade ocidental. Como é sabido, a Reforma, desencadeada por Lutero, impôs a abolição das ordens religiosas, obrigando os seus membros a optar por outras «soluções de sobrevivência»; neste enquadramento, muitos desses religiosos buscaram asilo e proteção em Portugal, a partir do século XVI, como nos relatam vários textos de natureza hagiográfica e biográfica devota produzidos e editados ao longo da Época Moderna. Tendo como pano de fundo esta problemática, este estudo procura chamar a atenção para os moldes em que se destacou e valorizou, nessas obras de pendor hagiográfico e biográfico devoto, não apenas os casos desses religiosos, mas também de leigos, oriundos de territórios reformados — Inglaterra, Norte da Europa —, que buscaram asilo em Portugal, os quais não podem ser dissociados da ofensiva contrarreformista e da tentativa de construção de uma história da santidade do reino de Portugal.

Abstract (EN): The progressive advance of the Protestant Reformation in several European territories, from 1517, provoked a fracture in western Christendom. As it is known, the Reformation imposed the abolition of the religious orders, obliging their members to opt for other «solutions of survival»; in this context, many of these religious sought asylum and protection in Portugal from the 16th century onwards, as several texts of a hagiographic and biographical devout nature edited throughout the Modern Age show. Against this background, this study seeks to draw attention to the ways in which these works of hagiographical and biographical nature were highlighted and valued, not only the cases of these religious but also of lay people from the Reformed territories — England, Northern Europe — who sought asylum in Portugal, which can not be dissociated from the counter-reformist offensive and the attempt to build a history of the sanctity of the kingdom of Portugal.
