Resumo (PT): Este estudo pretende mostrar como a transferência de conhecimento entre a medicina norte- -americana e portuguesa permitiu criar na década de 1920 uma nova área de estudo e tratamento médico, a diabetologia. Não obstante os estudos e a investigação dedicada à diabetes anteriormente à década de 1920, muito pouco se havia feito em termos terapêuticos. Com o final da Grande Guerra inicia-se nos Estados Unidos da América a diabetologia social, que chegou a Portugal através do Dr. Ernesto Roma que estagiava então na prestigiada Harvard Medical School e que com o seu regresso em 1923 revolucionou o tratamento e assistência aos doentes diabéticos em Portugal.

Abstract (EN): This study aims to show how the transfer of knowledge between North-American and Portuguese medicine allowed to create in the 1920s a new medical area of study and treatment, the diabetology. Despite studies and research on diabetes prior to the 1920s, very little had been done therapeutically. With the end of the Great War, the social diabetology began in the United States, which arrived in Portugal through Dr. Ernesto Roma, who was then at the prestigious Harvard Medical School and who, with his return in 1923, revolutionized the treatment and care of diabetic patients in Portugal.
