Abstract (EN): This article presents a clinical study where an infrared thermal camera was included in the protocol, as a complementary diagnostic method for TMD disorders. This patient showed the presence of signs and symptoms characteristic of TMD, such as pain in the TMJ during mandibular function and palpation of the TMJ, noises in the TMJ and deviation of mandibular movements. Facial thermography was made using right and left lateral projections during clench and when eating. Results showed an increase of 1.2 degrees C between the left TMJ and the right TMJ.The spot temperature over the region of the involved TMJ demonstrated an increase temperature compared to the normal TMJ. This clinical research study appears to be consistent to indicate that there is a presence of thermal asymmetry in a patient with a TMJ disorder. However, further studies should be made to validate this non-invasive diagnostic technique.
