Resumo (PT): Oporto and the Douro: views and monuments, cujo texto e arranjo gráfico ficaram a cargo de Frederic P. Marjay, foi uma obra editada em 1955 pela livraria Bertrand, em Lisboa, Portugal. Ocupa um lugar despercebido entre as várias publicações de propaganda turística portuguesa que veiculavam a ideia de um país pitoresco e progressista, que começou a ser gizado pela Política do Espírito por volta de 1932, mas com raízes nos últimos anos da Monarquia. O livro, com uma parte composta ao modo de álbum, chama a atenção pelas suas fotografias a preto e branco de página inteira: vistas de locais, monumentos, reprodução de pinturas históricas e retratos de tipos sociais, marcadas por um ritmo contrastante de brancos e negros, com características pictorialistas. Analisar o arranjo gráfico da obra, a cargo de Marjay, e compreender, através dos fotógrafos e das suas fotografias, os significados deste trabalho (propagandístico, político e artístico), refletindo sobre as temáticas veiculadas, é o nosso objetivo principal.

Abstract (EN): Oporto and the Douro: views and monuments, whose text and graphic arrangement oversaw Frederic P. Marjay, was published in 1955 by Bertrand, in Lisbon, Portugal. It occupies an unnoticed place among the various publications of Portuguese tourist propaganda that conveyed the idea of a picturesque and progressive country, which began to be defined by the "Política do Espírito" around 1932, but with roots in the last years of the Monarchy. The book, with a part composed as an album, attracts attention due to its entire page black and white photographs: views of places, monuments, reproduction of historical paintings and portraits of social types, marked by a contrasting rhythm of B&W photos, with pictorial characteristics. To analyse the graphic arrangement of the work, under the responsibility of F. Marjay, and to understand, through the photographers and their photographs, the meanings of this work (propaganda, political and artistic), reflecting on the themes conveyed is our main objective.
