Abstract (EN):
Evidence on perceptions of genetically modified food and organic food shows contrasting attitudes by consumers. This paper presents results from a questionnaire designed to examine consumer perceptions towards organic and GM food as well as elicit the willingness to pay a premium for organic food or accept a discount for GM food. As for organic food, the respondents acknowledge their benefits for health and the environment, but while many are willing to pay a price premium for an organic item, the price premium is still modest in relation to market prices. GMOs are a more controversial topic and opinions in the sample are not unanimous. However, in the valuation question, the majority of respondents would buy the GM item if it carried a discount relative to the baseline non-GM item. We conclude from these preliminary results that, at least for these young respondents, potential consumers seem willing to embrace organic and GM food as long as the "right is price".
