Abstract (EN):
The results of a finite element analysis of bonded inserts are presented. The analysis included the non-linear nature of the adhesive and the contact between the bolt and the insert. It was shown that the bonded inserts resulted in a more even radial stress distribution, with the potential for increasing the joint strength. Stiffer inserts (steel rather than aluminium) were more effective in redistributing the stresses, but produced higher stresses in the adhesive, with the associated likelihood of failure, premature damage in the laminate and reduced strength. Thicker insects showed similar trends.
