Resumo (PT): A definição de "Iluminismo" dada por Kant em "Was ist Aufklärung?" quase nada tem a ver com a atual definição do conceito. O "iluminismo", quando considerado pelos autores do século XVIII (de Kant a Mendelssohn, de Bahrdt a Wieland), é uma pedagogia interdisciplinar, que cruza saberes literários, científicos e técnicos. "Sapere aude", ousa saber: o Iluminismo decorre desta radicalidade que une as humanidades, as técnicas e as ciencias, e não de uma concepção periodológica ou retórico-estilística do século XVIII, tal como hoje o entendemos. A vida e a obra de José Anastácio da Cunha, poeta e matemático, é especialmente coerente com este "iluminismo" kantiano, seja quando despreza as regras retóricas; seja quando se recusa a dar a solução prévia dos problemas matemáticos; seja quando mistura Geometria e Poesia; seja ainda quando discute os principios pedagógicos do seu tempo, de Mme de Genlis, ou de Rousseau...

Abstract (EN): The definition of Enlightenment given by Kant in "Was ist Aufklärung?" has almost nothing to do with the definition given today to the concept. The Enlightenment, considered by the authors of the eighteenth century (as Kant, Mendelssohn, Bahrdt or Wieland), is an interdisciplinary pedagogy that crosses literary, scientific and technical knowledge. "Sapere aude" dare to know: Enlightenment flows from this radicalism that unites humanities, technics and sciences, surely not from the definition of an historical period or a stylistic or rhetorical typology. The life and work of Jose Anastacio da Cunha, poet and mathematician, always seems consistent with this Enlightenment’s definition: when he disregards the rules of rhetorical handbooks; when he refuses to give the previous solution of the mathematical problems; when he mix geometry with poetry; even when he discuss the pedagogical ideas of his time, from Mme de Genlis to Rousseau.
