Objectives

The curricular unit aims at the development, presentation, and defense of an original individual project, which must include a clear justification/objective and thematic development, and may take the form of a monograph or report, based on the activity carried out, potentially during a scientific or professional internship. Additionally, it seeks to promote the development of interprofessional skills, in a real environment and context, within the scope of Health Sciences and related fields.

Learning outcomes and competences

At the end of the course unit, students should be able to apply and consolidate the fundamental principles of science and the scientific method, applying them to research domains and clinical activities in Dentistry. It is expected that they will recognize the main areas of biomedical research, including laboratory, clinical, health services, and translational research, and be able to use digital tools and databases to conduct relevant scientific research. They should be capable of analyzing different study methodologies, ensuring the correct collection and treatment of data based on biostatistics concepts, and developing skills in synthesis, critical analysis, and creativity in hypothesis formulation. The ability to write and communicate scientific results clearly will be developed, along with an understanding of the principles of scientific integrity and the ability to identify and avoid misconduct. Additionally, students should prepare for effective public presentations and improve their oral communication skills in formal settings, as well as foster a productive relationship with their supervisors through appropriate interpersonal skills.
