Objectives

Supervised clinical practice with patients, complemented by the presentation and discussion of clinical cases, allow students to develop theoretical knowledge, as well as the skills and competencies necessary to an integrated clinical practice of Dental Medicine.

 Relevant clinical cases might be considered for publication in scientific journals and/or meetings.

Learning outcomes and competences

This CU includes diverse teaching methods, in accordance with the syllabus and the defined objectives.

In Theory and Practical classes, by presenting and discussing clinical cases, the student broadens his scientific knowledge and enhances critical thinking. In Practical classes, the supervised clinical training provides students the opportunity to develop technical, cognitive and affective skills, using their knowledge in an integrated manner.

  • Theory and practice classes with presentation, discussion and treatment planning of illustrative clinical cases and issues related to ergonomics and health units management

  • Practical classes with patients, including:


- medical history and clinical examination of patients


- study of clinical cases


- diagnosis and treatment planning, uni or multidisciplinary, with alternative approaches and budgets


- request and critical analysis of laboratory support to the medical treatment of patients


- integrated clinical management of patients


- live demonstration on patients, conducted by the professor, of less common clinical situations

- Learning and training of work skills in a pandemic environment with the execution of clinical acts with personal protective equipment and specific protocols for the situation in question

THEORY AND PRACTICAL CLASSES: presentation, discussion and treatment planning of clinical cases addressing the various topics of Dental Medicine. Development of a Business Plan in the field of Dental Medicine.

PRACTICAL CLASSES: supervised clinical practice with patients.

Eligibility for exams

Terms of frequency: minimum attendance of 75% in the classes.

Calculation formula of final grade

Final grade formula:

Evaluation of clinical practice, including attendance, punctuality, familiarity with the procedure, theoretical knowledge, autonomy, the level of the clinical procedure, clinical outcome and the use of predefined clinical protocols – 80%

Evaluation of clinical case reports – 10%

Evaluation of the Business Plan – 10%

Extra bonus to produce a scientific publication, in the form of a poster (with mandatory referee) up to 0.5 points or in the form of an article (with mandatory referee) up to 1 point.

 

Performance of clinical acts above the general average up to 0.5 points (0.25 bonus points up to 25% above the average of acts performed and 0.5 bonus points above 25% of the average of acts performed)

 

exemption from class absences bonus up to 0.5 points (0.25 bonus points up to 2 absences and 0.5 bonus points without any absences)

 

At the beginning of the semester, the number of mandatory minimum clinical acts must be established and agreed upon: 3 tooth extractions, 1 endodontics, 2 pediatric dentistry surgeries and 1 occlusion and orofacial Pain act

 

At the beginning of the semester, the number of clinical act reports to be submitted must be established and agreed upon: 3 surgery, 1 endodontics, 2 pediatric dentistry, 1 Occlusion and Orofacial Pain, 3 operative dentistry and 3 preventive dentistry.
