Teaching on "Pharmacology and Therapeutics I" aims at providing substantial pharmacological knowledge, in order to allow the understanding of subsequent course units related to therapeutics. It has the following objectives:

-   knowledge acquisition inGeneral pharmacology, namely, the basic pharmacological concepts, to the development of skills in the understanding and application of the principles of pharmacology, common to the use of any drug.

- knowledge acquisition in the pharmacology of drugs with actions in the main body systems, aiming a comprehensive and integrated understanding of the various pharmacological groups, for the knowledge of the actual drugs and the acquisition of skills for a critical assessment of the new drugs.

- understanding of toxics and intoxications.

The course is set on a structural approach with growing complexity of its syllabus. Initially, basic concepts are introduced in the "General principles of pharmacology". Knowledge of the concepts that are common to the use of any drug, as the kinetic behavior in the body, the general mechanisms of action and the evaluation of the therapeutic effects are essential for the rational use of drugs. Next, the pharmacology of the main body systems, allowing the illustration, application and integration of the basic concepts in the understanding of the pharmacological profile of drugs or drug groups. This approachgradually instills the importance of an integrated vision of the pharmacological profile of a drug, in the optimization of the risk/benefit ratio.

- General concepts: pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; variability of drug response; adverse drug reactions; pharmacological interactions. Discovery, development and evaluation of new drugs.

- Pharmacology of the body systems: peripheral nervous system; central nervous system; hemostasis and hematopoiesis; cardiovascular system; respiratory system; gastrointestinal tract; endocrine system. Immunopharmacology. Anticancer drugs. For each pharmacological group, the following aspects are considered: main drugs, mechanism of action and pharmacological actions, pharmacokinetics, therapeutic indications, adverse reactions and precautions and contraindications.

- Toxics and intoxications.

The course is organized in theoretical, theoretical-practical and practical classes. T lectures are participated classes that aim to introduce new concepts of the selected topic. P classes, with a participated tutorial approach, based in a problem-based learning approach, which aims to expand and strengthen the concepts developed with T lectures. The evaluation focuses on the integration of knowledge and decision-making.

To meet the following requirements of the continuous evaluation:

- Presentation, resolution and discussion of case-problems/clinical cases during P lectures (10% of the final classification)

- Presentation of an issue related with the syllabus, in a TP lecture (10% of the final classification) 

- Test focusing a integrative clinical case, at the end of the semester (10% of the final classification).
