Objectives
Patient-centred healthcare involves a multidisciplinary approach with effective communication between the various stakeholders. Oral health is fundamental for the patient's global health and its involves the patient's biopsychosocial approach, with knowledge of other concomitants pathologies, risk assessment for dental procedures and main drug interactions that may occur in the scope of prescription by the dentist.
The UC of Medical Specialties I has the following general objectives:
- Acquisition of autonomy, self-learning skills and purposes of continuing education that ensure the preservation of personal attitude and professional competence adequate to the performance of medical practice throughout life;
- Acquisition of attitudes and attributes essential to the performance of the profession, realizing the definitive importance of the doctor-patient relationship;
- Provide clinical context to previously acquired content and provide students with the ability to act in the most common urgent clinical situations within the scope of their activity.
Learning outcomes and competences
In this Curricular Unit, students are expected to acquire the following skills:
- Autonomy and self-learning capacity and motivation for continuing education
- Appropriate posture and communication for the performance of the profession
- Recognition of the importance of the clinical record, functions and methodology
- Knowledge of basic principles and procedures for patient safety;
- Knowledge of the most common clinical manifestations of chronic pathologies such as heart failure, dysrhythmias, lung disease, liver disease, kidney disease and diabetes mellitus as well as their implications for oral health and the treatment of these patients
- Ability to diagnose and treat the main pathologies of the oropharynx
- Knowledge of when and how to take antibiotic prophylaxis
- Knowledge of the main pathologies of the maxillofacial forum
- Knowledge of the metabolism of the drugs most frequently used in the practice of dentistry, their toxicity, drug interactions and need for dose adjustment
- Ability to interpret auxiliary diagnostic tests necessary for the practice of dentistry
- Capacity to manage medical emergencies

Chronic lung disease: most common manifestations (Chronic bronchitis/emphysema and asthma)
Oral health and the relationship with heart and lung disease. Antibiotic prophylaxis: when and how to do it

Chronic kidney disease, nephrotoxicity and drug adjustment

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical course: plenary classes with 50 minutes of duration per week. Approach to the contents identified above
Theoretical-practical course: 2 hours/week, with discussion of clinical cases
Portfolio: 2 essays on topics relevant to professional practice

Eligibility for exams
To obtain attendance, it is necessary to attend at least 75% of the scheduled classes
Calculation formula of final grade
Final classification (0-20 scale):
Continuous Assessment - 25%
Portfolio - 25%
Final Exam - 50%
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
All special exams authorized for students with statute will be oral tests.
Classification improvement
The improvement of the classification of the final exam will be carried out in the written test that takes place in the following two seasons, as provided for in the UP regulations.
