Objectives
KNOWLEDGE: Students will need to know that behavior is an essential determinant of health and that information conveyed in the media is an important tool used in all modern societies. Students will learn that important public health issues can be addressed in films, watched by a large audience, with big positive and negative potential.
ABILITIES: Students will need to be able to integrate their previously acquired knowledge and abilities from the other units of the Master in Dental Medicine and apply this within the context of Public Health. They will learn how to make a critical appraisal of health messages conveyed in commercial films.
ATTITUDES: Students will need to understand the importance of dental surgeons (dentists) acting as advocates of Public Health for the population.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Group work in the classroom. Students will watch and discuss four movies/documentaries: “And the Band Played On”, “Sicko”, “Thank you For Smoking” and “Fed Up”.
There will be a more detailed description of the teaching methods, made available in the Guidelines on SIGARRA.
Films will be seen and discussed during the lectures. A critical appraisal strategy will be used. Each students group will be responsible for the presentation and discussion of one film. See the bibliography on this teaching method, previously used by others.
Remote teaching strategies will be used till the 19th of April 2021. After that we hope to resume traditional approaches.

Eligibility for exams
According to the approved guidelines (Regulamento Geral para Avaliação dos discentes de primeiros ciclos, de ciclos de estudos integrados de mestrado e de segundos ciclos da Universidade do Porto). See the Guidelines text (“Guião”) for more information. Students will have to attend at least 75% of classes.
Calculation formula of final grade
The range of marks will be from 0 to 20, rounded up to the nearest whole number.
The final scores will have two components: work during the lectures (presentations and discussions) - 0.0 to 13.0; final written or oral exam - 0.0 to 7.0. None of the components is valid without the other.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, some changes might have to be done if a traditional written exame with students in University premisses will be considered "not safe".
Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)
According to the current regulations (Regulamento Geral para Avaliação dos discentes de primeiros ciclos, de ciclos de estudos integrados de mestrado e de segundos ciclos da Universidade do Porto).
Classification improvement
According to the current regulations. See the Guidelines for more information. Students failing the normal written exam or willing to improve their mark in “Época de Recurso” will have a viva voce.
Observations
More information is available on SIGARRA in the Guidelines (“Guião”), which include more detailed information about the study unit including the mandatory references to be used as well as additional complementary ones.
In this moment it is not possible to anticipate the epidemiological situation of COVID-19 epidemic in the second semester of 2020-2021, nor the implications for the learning-teaching activities in this course unit. But we all should be aware of the possibility of important changes in the learning-teaching activities, should the epidemiological situation demand them.
