Objectives

Biopathology II essential goal is to prepare the student to use the study of the lesions (morphologic, immunologic, biochemical, molecular ones) as an instrument to comprehend the etiopathogenesis of the diseases and help in diagnosis proposals, therapy selection and establishment of prognosis of the most frequent entities, mostly at the oral cavity field of knowledge.

Learning outcomes and competences

With the teaching of this course unit the student will be able to
- recognize the degenerative and inflammatory disease that occurs more frequently in the oral cavity, and understand the progression of inflammatory disease in the oral cavity, particularly the morphological, clinical behavior and treatment possible;
- classify the developmental changes that affect the teeth, soft tissue and bone;
- classify neoplastic diseases of the oral cavity, risk factors and its etiopathogenesis and relate their clinical presentation with its histological appearance;
- know the anatomy, physiology and histology of the salivary glands and associated diseases;
- know the inflammatory and neoplastic diseases of the thyroid gland neoplasms and understand that cells may metastasize to cervical lymph nodes, mingling with metastasis of oral cancer;
- frame, by observation of the patient's skin, any systemic diseases explaining oral lesions;
- in the peptic ulcer, recognize the interaction between a host with greater or lesser susceptibility characteristics and features of the offending microbe;
- recognize the factors that contribute to the appearance of the two main types of gastric carcinoma and hereditary development of the diffuse type gastric carcinoma,
- recognize colorectal cancer as the second most frequent cause of cancer in Portugal and that can be presented in sporadic context or setting hereditary syndromes;
- understand how the different histological types of leukemias and lymphomas account for diseases with different clinical course.
- know the respiratory disease, especially of the upper airway, appreciating distinctions in terms of clinical presentation, oral pathology;
- know the genitourinary pathology feminine and masculine frequently;
- and, outline the disease in terms of genetic-environmental interaction, extracting from this attitude core competencies in the field of preventive medicine.

Teaching methods and learning activities

In the lectures the student completes their knowledge on the topics of Biopathology. This knowledge will then be consolidated in seminars and practical classes.

The seminars are presented texts and iconographic material, accessible previously available to the student. With this it is intended that the student make a preliminary study of the available material in order to be able to discuss its contents with the teacher.

In practical classes discusses one or two themes based on selected and previously material available to students (macroscopic aspects of surgical specimens, routine histological slides of photographs, photographs of histological slides with special staining and immunohistochemistry and pathology photographs ultrastructural).

Type of class and duration:

  • A theoretical lesson each week, lasting one hour:initial exposure of about 40 to 45 minutes followed by a discussion 10-15 minutes;
  • A seminar each week, lasting two hours;
  • A Practical Approach biweekly, lasting two hours.

Eligibility for exams

Students will not obtain frequency if exceeded the limit of fouls corresponding to 25% of the classes (seminars and practical classes) provided on the course record (available in SIGARRA).

Absences are marked up to 10 minutes after the start of class.

Calculation formula of final grade

The evaluation consists of a practical exam (7 points) and a Theoretical Exam (13 points).

The practical exam will be made on documents (slides representing macroscopic lesions, histological or other) shown in practical classes, seminars and lectures.

The theoretical exam will consist of questions such as "multiple choice" (choose 1 of 5 hypotheses) and short answer questions.

Examinations or Special Assignments

According to the faculty’s evaluation rules.

Special assessment (TE, DA, ...)

According to the faculty’s evaluation rules.
