Objectives

During the Anatomy II course students will learn the anatomical terminology and the nomenclature of the regions in which the human body is subdivided (Nomina Anatomica) as well as the detailed constitution of the locomotor system. Students will have the opportunity to study the Central Nervous System, Sensory Organs, the Cranial Nerves and the Splanchnology.

Learning outcomes and competences

Developing capacities for observation and autonomous study, acquisition of bases of descriptive method and integration of the morphological knowledge with notions of functional anatomy.

Teaching methods and learning activities

 

The lectures will be held in the Faculty of Dental Medicine, University of Porto, and have a duration of 60 minutes. They are mandatory. Lectures will be of three types: (i) introduction to large chapters, (ii) synthesis of subjects taught systematically in practical classes, and (iii) descriptive, whenever the practical approach does not enable their full understanding.

 The practical classes will be held at the Anatomy Theatre of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Porto, and have a duration of 90 and 120 minutes, respectively. They are mandatory. The opening minutes are devoted to the definition of objectives to achieve during each class and the remaining time will be spent to achieve those objectives through the study and observation of cadaveric material, under the guidance of a teacher.

EVALUATION

The evaluation includes a continuous assessment component or a final exam. 

DISTRIBUTED EVALUATION (DE) will be effected by performing 2 tests (DE1 and DE2) on days and time schedules. Each DE shall consist of a practical test (DEP) and a theoretical test (DET). Each DEP is a "gincana" and consists in the identification of a set of anatomical structures 15. These are placed in pairs, having the students to 1 minute to identify each set of two structures. Will be admitted to the distributed theoretical evaluation students in practical assessment distributed obtain rating equal to or greater than 9.5. Each ADT will have 30 multiple choice questions. They will be approved in the DET students who obtain a mark equal to or greater than 9.5. The final classification of each AD correspond to the following calculation:

DE = (DEP + 2 * DET) / 3

A Distributed Evaluation Final Note (DEFN) shall be the arithmetic average of the marks obtained in both DE. DEFN = (DE1 + DE2) / 2.

Students not approved in DE1 can not be admitted to DE2 and are not exempt from the final exam.

Students who obtain classification in DEFN less than 9.5 are excused from the final exam.

The FINAL EXAM will consist of a practical test and a theoretical test. The practical exam (P) is a "gincana" and consists of the identification of 30 anatomical structures. These are placed in pairs, having the students to 1 minute to identify each set of two structures. The classification of 20 points corresponds to the correct identification of 30 structures and classification of 9.5 for the correct identification of 20 structures. The intermediate marks will be calculated in proportion to the number of identified structures.

Students will be admitted to the theoretical exam the students in the practical exam obtain rating equal to or greater than 9.5.

The theoretical exam (T) consists of 50 questions, 30 short answer subdivided into two paragraphs and 20 multiple choice. They will be considered approved in the theoretical examination students who obtain rating equal to or greater than 9.5.

FE = P + 2 * T / 3 = 20 points
