Objectives

Aims, Skills and Learning Outcomes

The general goals of the UC Iconography are:

- To insure the knowledge of the basic concepts of photography and presentation;

- The use of photography applied to Dental practice;

- To be able to use adequate photographic techniques during case documentation.

Learning outcomes and competences

As a result of the learning the students will be able to make and present a photographic protocol with criteria of high quality.

  1. Introduction to Iconography and aims.

  2. The importance of Digital photography to Dental practice.

  3. Uses of Digital photography to Dental practice.

  4. Criteria for the selection of photographic items.

  5. Cameras and their components.

  6. Basic concepts in photography:

    1. Exposure;

    2. Aperture;

    3. Shutter speed;

    4. Shutter and aperture ring

    5. Depth of field

    6. White balance

    7. Histograms;

    8. Exposure programs: P, A, S, M.



  7. Intra-oral photography:

    1. Protocol;

    2. Materials;

    3. Characteristics of each photo: frontal, lateral, occlusal, overjet and overbite;




  8. Extra-oral photography:

    1. Protocol;

    2. Materials;

    3. Background;

    4. Lighting protocols;

    5. Protocols for each dental specialty;

    6. Characteristics of each photo: frontal, profile, ¾;




  9. Object photography:

    1. Materials;

    2. Light considerations;

    3. Practice: orthodontic appliances, dentures, dental impressions;

Theoretical practical classes with explanation of the theoretical foundations of the photographic techniques.

Live demonstration of extra and intraoral oral photography.

Practical exercises on the part of the students.
