Objectives


  1. Introduce the Psychology as a scientific domain, presenting its main models and approaches in an interdisciplinary perspective, building briges with Dental Medicine.

  2. To approach the person as a complex whole (considering individual, social and cultural dimensions of the person’s functioning) and within the specificities of each developmental phase (childhood, adolescence and adulthood).

  3. To apply observation, identification and interpretation skills to human expressions (behaviors, emotional reactions, or non-verbal communication) in the context of the dynamics of a dental medical interview.

  4. To act appropriately in the presence of those expressions and dynamics emerging in the context of the dental medical interview.

  5. To adopt a clinical attitude that contributes to a more successful dental medical practice (based on respect, attention, an available posture and an understanding and empathic approach to the person).

  6. To develop critical and analytical skills.

  7. To develop a professional attitude in class and regarding the medical interview process and peers/colleagues.

Learning outcomes and competences

3. It is expected that students: produce theoretical and theoretical-practical reflections on the contents exposed in classes.

  1. Introduction to clinical comunication.
  2. Opening the dental medicine interview.
  3. Obtaining the patient’s agenda and history of present illness.
  4. Background personal health and family and psychosocial history.
  5. Physical examination.
  6. Informing, planning and closing the interview.
  7. Nonverbal communication
  8. Structuring the interview and building a clinical relationship.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Theoretical classes:
(1 hour per week)
Presentation and discussion of the respective syllabus.

Theoretical-practical classes:
(1.5 hours per week)
Clinical nature, for the application of doctor-patient interaction skills: initial discussion of the topics for the class, observation of role-models, role-playing with peers and discussion (with feedback) based on clinical cases.
Group work on an important author for the development of knowledge of psychology.
Materials on each topic to be addressed are made available to the Moodle platform.

Eligibility for exams

Criteria:
- 75% minimum of class attendance;
- produce and deliver the requested pratical works;
- attending the final exam;
- 9,0 values minimum (on a 0 to 20 points scale) in each assesment element (i.e.: "continuous, processual" and "descontinuous, terminal").

Calculation formula of final grade

45% Continuous, processual - Participation and written work;
45% Descontinuous, terminal - Final exam;
10% Class attendance
