Objectives
The course aims at training and training in accordance with the internationally accepted standards and adequately regulated to the specialty of pediatric dentistry .
At the end of the course, the student should be competent for the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric patients. For this purpose should be able: - In all areas of pediatric dentistry care for the child growth and development. - The oral needs of conventional child and child with special needs, from birth to adolescence. - To continue to acquire knowledge and skills related to their specialty, throughout his professional life. - To investigate in clinical areas and basic science specialty. - To collaborate in multidisciplinary teams that aim to child health. - To teach oral health care for both children and their caregivers such as Doctors Dentists and member general staff of the health care team. - To exercise the specialty with high professional and ethical standards. - To act as an expert in pediatric dentistry and matters relating thereto.

Learning outcomes and competences
Graduating professionals in pediatric dentistry that:
- Be competent in all areas of pediatric dentistry care for the child growth and development.
- Be competent in oral needs of conventional children and children with special needs, from birth to adolescence.
- Be able to continue to acquire knowledge and skills related to their specialty, throughout his professional life.
- Be trained in Pediatric Dentistry and able to investigate in clinical areas and basic science specialty.
- Be able to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams that aim to child health.
- Be able to teach oral health care for both children and their caregivers such as Doctors general dentists and staff member of the health team.
- Be competent to exercise the specialty with high professional and ethical standards.
- Be competent to act as experts in pediatric dentistry and matters relating thereto.

Pre-requirements (prior knowledge) and co-requirements (common knowledge)
The Pediatric Dentistry is one of the specialty areas of dentistry recognized and regulated at European level. In Portugal , obtaining the title of specialist in Pediatric Dentistry by the Dental Association is necessarily preceded by theoretical and practical minimum training university department or higher education unit having at least 3 years in length and with prior recognition of competence on the part of the Order Dental Association ( OMD ) . It is internationally recognized the need for specialized training in this course of dentistry , to the extent that both the scientific evidence and clinical experience show that the acquisition of clinical skills in pediatric dentistry requires additional theoretical education and practical upon completion of preclinical studies -graduados that meet specific requirements and criteria.
Program
Pediatric dentistry is one of the specialty areas of dentistry recognized and regulated at European level. In Portugal, obtaining the title of specialist in Pediatric Dentistry by the Order of Dentists is obligatorily preceded by a minimum of theoretical and practical training in a university department or unit of higher education having at least 3 years of duration and with prior recognition of suitability by the Order Of the Medical Dentists (OMD).
The need for specialized training in this curricular unit of dental medicine is recognized internationally, since both scientific evidence and clinical experience demonstrate that the acquisition of clinical skills in the area of Pediatric Dentistry requires additional theoretical and practical education after completion of pre-study studies Graduates who meet specific requirements and criteria.
The syllabus includes formal instruction in a core of mandatory theoretical-practical subjects including odontopediatric subjects such as diagnosis and treatment plan from newborn to adolescence, behavioral and patient control sciences, prevention, restorative child dentistry, dental traumatology, Alterations in the eruption and development of occlusion, oral medicine and surgery for children, children with special and medically compromised needs, procedures in multidisciplinary treatments, principles of management, administration and ethics, basic life support, among others.
In addition to the mandatory theoretical subjects, students will actively participate in the diagnosis and treatment of children with various types of pathologies.
