When completing the course of Biomaterials the pupil must be qualified:
- To select and to manipulate the dental materials.
- To evaluate the biomaterials performance based in the scientific knowledge of its composition, structure and properties.
- To know the biomaterials limitations and the characteristics that can cause alterations when in service.
- To recognize and to understand the reasons for dental materials clinical failure.
- To evaluate in a critical way the characteristics of new materials presented by the producing industry, by the international standardization organizations or reported in scientific journals.
This information is related to biomedical materials included in the syllabus of this course.
The theoretical exposure of programmatic contents, relating to biomedical materials, since its origin, properties and behavior in different clinical situations, accompanied by the practical demonstration, either with regard to its handling as well as its application, will enable the students to recognize the importance of taught subjects in their future clinical practice.
Composites. Dentin adhesives. Dental ceramics. Alloys
Ceramic biomaterials
Biomaterial based on calcium phosphate. Hydroxyapatite
Calcium phosphate natural origin. Bioglasses
Polymers
The teaching methodology used in the theoretical lessons consist in the slide show, explaining the theoretical concepts related to biomedical materials, which are complemented with laboratory tests that assess their performance and with the clinical cases under its scope.
The evaluation includes the realization of a final exam, the result of which will correspond to the final grade of the student.
