Dental medicine is a scientific area in which the clinical and laboratory components are notorious.
The doctoral Course in dentistry, with 60 ECTS, is a highly theoretical course, but in which the need for connection to the clinic and laboratories, in terms of research, is useful and necessary.
Thus, this curriculum unit objectives are:
1. Research in clinical environment (retrospective studies or other) or not members of the dissertation.
2. Research in the laboratory environment (dental anatomy and Physiology, genetics, Prosthodontics, biomechanics, histocompatibility or other) or not members of the dissertation.
3. Teaching experience in ECTS in dentistry (MIMD), Masters (Oral Surgery – MCOB, or Oral Rehabilitation - MROB) or in specialized courses of FMDUP.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Students accompany and control clinical and / or laboratory activity in a job supervised directly by the teaching staff of the course, so the teaching method used in the context of this course is mostly of tutorial type. Seminars and / or group and individual work are planned to solve practical problems in common scenarios and to develop similar skills. At the same time, they develop individual research work that must be presented at the end of the year, and which, together with the continuous assessment carried out during the academic year, is an integral part of the evaluation of the course unit.

Calculation formula of final grade
Each student is distributed in a teaching schedule overlapping with a course unit (UC) of MIMD, MCOB, MROB or a Specialization Course (Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Orthodontics or Oral Rehabilitation) from FMDUP. This distribution is made taking into account the opinions of the student, the advisor / co-advisor, and the Regent of the Research Unit in Clinical and Laboratory Environment (IACL). The UC-IACL Regent may delegate functions to one of the UC faculty members. If you are not yet appointed as an advisor / co-advisor, the optional UCs in which the student enrolled in the Doctoral Course will also be taken into account. In exceptional and duly justified cases, at the request of the student and with the favorable opinion of the advisor / co-advisor, the Scientific Committee of the Doctoral Course may exempt the student from complying with the teaching schedule at FMDUP. In that case, the alternative must be expressly defined, namely the place, the institution, the person in charge and the type of work. The Regent of the UC in which the student has time and functions will be responsible for his attendance and for indicating to the Regent of the UC-IACL the objectives assigned to him and the respective evaluation.
