Objectives
To place prosthodontics within the context of dentistry.
To learn the terminology and the basic concepts in order to understand removable prosthodontics.
To study the consequences of tooth loss: individually, socially and economically.
To attain the needed theoretical and practical knowledge for the diagnosis of complete edentulous patient.
To acquire general knowledge related to the rehabilitation of edentulous patients with complete removable prosthesis.
To have contact with the equipment, the materials and the techniques used in prosthetic treatment.
Learning outcomes and competences
The student will be able to identify a clinical case of a complete edentulous patient, with all its anatomical and functional features.
The student will be able to establish a correct diagnosis and treatment plan for a complete edentulous patient.

Theoretical:
Complete dentures in Dental Medicine: aims and requirements.
Diagnosis of a complete edentulous patients.
Tooth loss and its consequences.
Rehabilitation of the complete edentulous patient with a complete denture.
Preliminary impressions and stone cast.
Mounting diagnostic casts on a semi adjustable articulator. Analysis of the diagnostic casts.
Diagnosis and treatment planning. Pre-prosthetic treatment needs.
Concepts of basic equipment, materials and procedures needed for the construction of a removable acrylic complete denture.
Definitive impression.
Jaw relation records.
Denture set-up (esthetic and full): occlusal concepts in complete denture.
Fitting complete dentures.
Recall procedures.
Auxiliary means of support and retention in complete dentures.
The future of complete dentures.
Practical:
Diagnostic casts.

Teaching methods and learning activities
Theoretical teaching - exposure of the materials listed in the program, illustrated and accompanied with appropriate iconography; the students are encouraged to participate dynamically in class.
Practical training - the students are supposed to carry out of the all tasks included in the program. Discussion of all works with the student for accomplishing the aim of learning: (1) how to make it and (2) why we do it.

Eligibility for exams
The student must:
-
attend at least 75% of all classes.
-
complete all the required assignments.
-
obtain a minimal grade of 9,5 (in 20) in each of the evaluation components.
Calculation formula of final grade
The final assessment takes attitude and behavior into account, with a 10% weight. Final examination with assessment of theoretical and theoretical/practical content, with a rating of 45%. Continuous assessment of the practical work done with a rating of 45%.

Students whose status allows a special participation in class and in the evaluation systemthe will have additional evaluation assignments.
We recommend that students wishing to take advantage of this special status should inform teachers at the beginning of the semester.
