Objectives

The Biopathology I course is dedicated to the study of structural and functional changes that underlie diseases, in cells, tissues and organs.
The course of Biopathology I aims to familiarize the student to a new language.

The anatomical and pathological language serves as the basis of all medical language and for its antiquity and universality in the field of biomedical sciences, is an indispensable element for the coherent integration of the "discoveries" that constantly occur (particularly in terms of Molecular Biology) and to the construction of the current body of scientific knowledge.

Learning this language implies not just memorizing words and concepts that they express, but also the ability to use this knowledge in the interpretation of data and problem solving.

It is intended that the student knows biological processes and disease models enabling it before a certain semiological framework, identify a set of possible diseases and predict their evolution.

Learning outcomes and competences

The student will acquire the main concepts anatomic-pathological concepts and will be able to understand the inflammatory, immunological, degenerative and neoplastic changes, underlying diseases. Concomitantly, the student will be able to identify structural and functional changes in cells, tissues and organs, specific of the disease.
Knowledge of biological processes and disease models allow the student towards a certain semiological framework, be able to identify a set of possible diseases and predict their evolution.

Teaching methods and learning activities

A theoretical lecture each week, lasting one hour: initial exposure of about 40 to 45 minutes followed by a discussion 10-15 minutes.

A seminar each week, lasting two hours, with the frontloading of students of the texts and iconographic material to be discussed during the seminar.

A practical session beweekly, lasting two hours. The class comprises the discussion of one or two subjects and is preceded by distribution to students previously selected material.

At SIGARRA will be available information concerning the running of the course, all documents to be discussed in seminars and practical sessions and a set of must-read articles.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Assessment Components

Description Type Time (hours) Weight (%) End date
Exame 100,00
Total: - 100,00

Eligibility for exams

Students will not obtain frequency if exceeded the limit of fouls corresponding to 25% of the classes (seminars and practical classes) provided in the Course record.

Absences are marked up to 10 minutes after the start of class.

Calculation formula of final grade

Calculation formula of final grade: 7 points (practice exam) + 13 points (theory test).

The Practice Exam includes 20 short answer questions, in limited time, and the documents that will be evaluated (gross lesions, histological or other) were shown in the Practical sessions and Seminars, or are very similar to those reproduced in the book Robbins Basic Pathology.

The Theory Test includes 50 questions such as "multiple choice" (choose 1 of 5 hypotheses) and 15 short-answer questions.
