To approach key concepts relevant to communication skills learning in a more experiential (practical and applicable to dentistry)


To make students more aware of the advantages of  embedding clinical communication skills in clinical practice (content), so that these skills become perceived as core elements of good practice and higher quality care.

Learning outcomes and competences

Be able to create and maintain a therapeutic environment conducive to sound development of dental practice;Be able to identify the needs and motivations that lead a patient to seek a dentist;Promote greater recognition of the importance of effective communication in the dentist-patient relationship;Stimulate discussion and reflection on important references of clinical communication;Recognize the teamwork processes;Identify and develop personal skills that result in collaborative practices;Describe and use of communication models in healthcare teams;Train specific skills to improve communication on basic and challenging clinical situations.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Based on a medical communication skills model, the various stages of the consultation process and the main communication skills to be used in each of these moments will be shown. Then, according to research carried out within the psychology applied to dentistry, evidence will be presented on how to deal with the major challenges of dentistry.

Eligibility for exams

Criteria:
- 75% minimum of class attendance;
- to activelly participate in the class activities;
- to produce and to deliver the requested pratical works;
- to attend to the final exam;
- 9,5 values minimum (on a 0 to 20 points scale) in each assesment element.

Calculation formula of final grade

5% - Attendance

10% - Interviews / critical reflection
10% - Training general Experiential-performance
30% - Evaluation practice - individualized simulated scenarios
