Objectives
- provide physics concepts relevant in the practice of dental medicine
- approach the physical fundaments of techniques used in imaging and treatmens, in dental medicine.
Program
1) Terminology
- Directions and orientations of standard image plans used on the description of the human body; movement of human body members and analogy with physical systems; Scale relations.
2) Forces and Stability, in the context of the Human Body - Statics
- Newton laws; translaction forces; rotational forces, inertia, torque; static equilibrium conditions
3) Dynamics in the human body
- from statics to movement: muscles; pression; walking: muscle forces variation during walk. Description of movement in terms of energy; Work.
4) Mechanical properties of the human body
- Elasticity: material types; stress - tension curve; Hooke law: stress, compression, shear, torsion; Elastic energy and its storage in muscles; non elastic materials ; visco-elasticity: physical models of muscle properties
5) Physical properties of the Human Body
- energy consumption, muscle force; passive and active muscles; Hill curve
6) Biomaterials
- definition, and types; dental implants; hard and soft tissues implants;
7) Metabolism
- energy, termodynamic systems, calorific capacity, specific heat; energy in food; basal metabolic processes; mechanical work and power; heat loss processes; body temperature
8) Electric properties of the human body
- electrical charges, forces and potential; concepts: electrical current, tension, electrical circuits; electrical conductivity in blood and tissues; membranes; action potencials; ionic channels
9) Topics in Dental Imaging
- structure of mater and radiation; ionizing radiarion: X-raios X; microscopy; OCT: optical coherence tomography.
