Objectives

To provide first-year students with the basic skills necessary to deal with the literature they will be obliged to read in English as part of their course. As the skills in language learning cannot be entirely separated, the course will also require some speaking, listening and writing on the part of the students to ascertain their understanding of the texts, though comprehension of written texts will always be the main emphasis.

1.Reading for general meaning
2.Reading for specific meaning
3.Identifying key points in a text
4.Dealing with difficult words; understanding word structure
5.Understanding how facts/ideas are connected in a text.
6.Understanding collocations
7.Finding related word forms and grouping words in semantic sets (glossaries)
8.Interpreting graphics



Methodology

Texts - on different areas of dentistry, and of varying length and difficulty - will be looked at in class and a number of exercises and activities will be undertaken to help the students develop useful reading strategies.

This is a student-centred course in which students will expected to participate actively. There will also be a certain amount of preparation and consolidation outside class hours.
Material to be used in class will mostly be provided by the teachers but students are expected to have access to a good quality mono-lingual English dictionary and a good quality English-Portuguese dictionary

Teaching methods and learning activities

This is a student-centred course in which students will expected to participate actively. There will also be a certain amount of preparation and consolidation outside class hours.
Material to be used in class will mostly be provided by the teachers but students are expected to have access to a good quality mono-lingual English dictionary and a good quality English-Portuguese dictionary. They will be expected to build up their own glossaries of useful terms – both specific to dentistry and more general words/ phrases which are used in text construction.

Students are expected to work in groups and select texts for presentation to the rest of the group with glossary and comprehesnsion questonis devised by them.

Students are also expected to produce one oral presentation of a topic related to dentistry.

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Eligibility for exams

Attendance of at least 2/3 of the lessons.

Calculation formula of final grade

60% written exam and 40% oral presentations.

Classification improvement

The fianl grade can be improved in teh exam period immediatelyfollowing that in which the student passed.
