Objectives

1. Knowledge of the pharmacology of the pain and inflammation, antimicrobial drugs and agents affecting hemostasis, because of their relevance in dentistry.
2. Knowledge of the pharmacology of the principal systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and endocrine). For these groups of drugs, implications for dentistry are also addressed, namely adverse drug reactions in the oral cavity, precautions and interactions with the drugs used/prescribed by the dental professional.
3. Approach to some special topics in dentistry, namely the use of fluoride as an anticarie agent, conscious sedation, antibiotic prophylaxis and a systematization of the adverse drug reactions in the oral cavity and the relevant drug interactions.

Teaching methods and learning activities

Teaching time / week / student:
1 theoretical class (60 minutes)
1 theoretical-practical / practical class (120 minutes)

Evaluation Type

Distributed evaluation with final exam

Calculation formula of final grade

1. Normal assessment

• Continuous evaluation (A) = 10 (out for 10)

a) Monograph + Poster = 2 (out of 10)
b) Evaluation during the practical lessons = 3 (out of 10)
c) 3 Minitests = 5 (out of 10)
(adverse drug reactions and drug interactions of the several drug groups)

• Final evaluation (B) = 10 (out of 20)

Final examination test
(mechanisms of action, pharmacological actions, clinical use of the several drug groups)

Final classification = A + B / 2

Minimum classification for approval = 10 (out of 20)

2. Second opportunity assessment

Minimum classification for approval = 10 (out of 20)
