Biopathology - Anatomic Pathology
Instance: 2004/2005 - A
Cycles of Study/Courses
Objectives
The main objective of the teaching of Biopathology is to create conditions for the learning of new language. The learning of this language is based not only on memorisation of words and the concepts they convey, but also on the ability to use this knowledge in data analysis and problem solving.
The second objective of Biopathology learning is to improve the observation and description skills at different levels (macroscopic, microscopic, histochemical, etc.), thus being able to think on biopathological terms.
Program
The Biopathology programme is made of two parts that correspond roughly to the two semesters:
1st semester – “General Pathology” and
2nd semester – “Systemic Pathology”.
Main Bibliography
Any book Anatomic Pathology such as the latest two editions of Robbin’s PATHOLOGIC BASIS OF DISEASE or the OXFORD TEXTBOOK OF PATHOLOGY is adequate, although they might be sometimes too detailed (Oxford Textbook of Pathology is available in three volumes). As a compromise, the 6th edition of BASIC PATHOLOGY is suggested (authors: Kumar V, Cotran RS and Robbins SL; Publishing Company: W. B. Saunders Co; 1997).
Teaching methods and learning activities
The teaching process is similarly organised in the two semesters, including the following kinds of “classes/working sessions”.
·2 Lectures per week of 1 hour each: explanation of a subject in about 40 minutes followed by a discussion of about 20 minutes.
·2 Practical Classes per week of 1h30m minutes each. The first class every week is aimed at observing materials previously selected. The second class is aimed at discussing the conclusions arising from that observation.
·1 Seminar per week of 1h30m each (maximum). Some of these seminars are tailored as Clinico-Pathologic Meetings.
·1 Autopsy per semester: all over the year, each Practical Class should attend and conduct the histological study of two autopsies.
Evaluation Type
Evaluation with final exam
Calculation formula of final grade
Practical Exam (5 points) and Theoretical Exam (15 points).
