Objectives
Oral Medicine II aims student’s knowledge about oral pathology of local aetiology or as expression of systemic diseases, and its clinical features in lips, oral mucosa, mouth floor, tongue, salivary glands, palate and oropharynx.
Program
Introduction to precancerous (or premalignant) lesions and conditions.
Precancerous lesions: leucoplakia, leukoedema, oral submucous fibrosis, erythroplasia.
Precancerous lesions: lichen planus, pigmented nevus and smokeless tobacco-related keratoses.
Recurrent aphthous stomatitis.
Chronic ulcerative stomatitis.
Tongue disorders.
Non-neoplastic diseases of salivary glands.
Neoplastic diseases of salivary glands.
Common benign mucosal swellings.
Periodontal manifestations of systemic diseases.
Oral cancer.
Soft tissue neoplasms.
Respiratory tract disease. Oral manifestations.
Cardiovascular disease. Oral manifestations.
Oral manifestations of endocrine disorders.
Haemorrhagic diseases. Oral manifestations of anaemia, leukaemias and lymphomas.
Renal disease. Oral manifestations.
Oral manifestations of skin diseases.
Oral manifestations of metabolic diseases.

Teaching methods and learning activities
The teaching of Oral Medicine II is based on the delivery of theoretical and theoretical/practical classes.
Theoretical classes last for 45 minutes, but the last 15 minutes are reserved for the students to clear their doubts. These classes are optional.
The theoretical/practical teaching is organised for small groups of students, encouraging group work and their critical participation in the discussion of a subject.

Eligibility for exams
The theoretical assessment of the students shall be made on two tests on the subjects taught, including 30 multiple-choice questions and 5 questions for further explanation.
Students do not need to go to the final exam if they obtain a grade above 10 on each of the tests.
If students fail tests or request other opportunity for upgrading, an oral exam can be taken.
